The Democrats’ parliamentary group comprising 12 members today held a leadership election, resulting in Ali Azim being elected as the new leader.

Notably, in the 12-member group, only three of them are officially affiliated with The Democrats: Ali Azim, Imthiyaz Fahmy, representing Maafannu North, and Hussain Firushan, the MP from Madaveli.

During the internal election, a total of 11 members were present, and they voted unanimously to determine various leadership positions.

It is important to note that The Democrats, led by former members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), had contested the presidential election.

However, their candidate, Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb, secured the third position in the race with a total of 15,839 votes. The party did not progress to the second round of the presidential election.
