At Least 111 Businesses in Greater Male’ Area Linked to Prostitution, Says Gov’t

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan disclosed that 111 business establishments in the Male’ area are under scrutiny for allegedly operating as fronts for prostitution, highlighting a pervasive concern in the Maldives.

During a press briefing convened by authorities from the home sector, Minister Ihusaan underscored the prevalence of establishments, including massage parlours and spas, suspected of facilitating illicit activities.

Emphasising the gravity of the situation, Minister Ihusaan revealed that some of these businesses reportedly exploit foreign nationals on tourist visas for prostitution purposes.

Efforts are underway to address these concerns through legal measures, the Minister Ihusaan affirmed, indicating a proactive stance towards tackling such activities.

Additionally, Minister Ihusaan commended the progress made by a dedicated task force in combating narcotics. Notably, authorities have seized drugs and alcohol with an estimated value of MVR 41.4 million.

In parallel, the minister highlighted measures taken to address undocumented migration, with 183 individuals detained and 83 subsequently deported.

Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, also addressing the press conference, detailed ongoing efforts to combat gang-related activities. Over 3,000 individuals have been stopped in these operations, resulting in the arrest of 300 individuals, including 16 foreigners.

Furthermore, Commissioner Shujau outlined actions taken against vehicles associated with criminal gangs, with 112 vehicles intercepted and 11 seized by law enforcement authorities.
