Authorities Investigate Vandalism at Masjid al-Furqan
Police are investigating a case of vandalism at Masjid al-Furqan in Male’ City after significant damage was discovered by prayer-goers this morning.
The damage was reported following the Fajr prayer, with copies of the Holy Quran thrown on the floor and various items inside the mosque damaged.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the incident was reported to authorities and that an investigation is underway.
In a post made on Facebook, local scholar Adam Nishan Ali Adam, a regular at Masjid al-Furqan, described the extent of the damages caused in the mosque.
“Before the Fajr prayers today, the copies of the Holy Quran in the back of Furqan mosque was scattered across the floor, electrical outlets and adapters near the imam’s seat were destroyed, and taps in the ablution area had been broken off, other items in the mosque were thrown around and damaged”
Nishan suggested that the vandalism may have been committed by a young individual, often seen sleeping at the mosque, whom he described as mentally unstable. He expressed frustration over repeated incidents of vandalism at the mosque, claiming that the same individual had been responsible for similar acts in the past. Nishan also raised concerns about the mosque’s CCTV surveillance system, questioning its effectiveness in preventing such incidents.
Nishan later clarified that after the incident was reported, police officers arrived at the mosque, collected information, and forensic officers took photos of the scene.
Mosques in Male’ have been frequent targets of vandalism and theft in recent years, with some attributing these incidents to individuals facing substance abuse issues.
