The Hulhumale’ Court has ruled that former attorney general Azima Shakoor must repay MVR 4 million to the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) due to her failure to make regular payments on a loan obtained from the bank.
Court documents reveal that Azima received a loan of MVR 3,186,369.23, using an apartment at the Platinum Residence in Hulhumale’ as collateral. The court found her in breach of the agreed-upon payment schedule.
The court’s decision, issued in absentia yesterday, mandates Azima to settle MVR 4,156,355.32 in outstanding loan payments and penalties to MIB within the next six months, concluding on July 2.
Azima, currently a candidate in the upcoming Male’ City mayoral elections, asserted that her financial challenges were exacerbated by a criminal case brought against her by the previous administration. This, she claims, hindered her ability to practice law and earn a living.
Despite describing the ruling as “personal” during a campaign event, Azima emphasised that the decision would not impact her candidacy. She defended her record, stating that she served in powerful state positions without any corruption allegations against her.
This development follows Azima’s 2019 charges of providing false statements to a state institution and facilitating money laundering.
Allegedly, she gave false statements to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in the money laundering case against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who was her client at the time.
