Authorities have collected biometric data from 18,919 foreigners across 194 islands since Operation Kurangi launched in May this year.

The multi-agency operation, led by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology,  has completed work on 50 islands, according to State Minister Abdul Majeed Ibrahim.

Majeed told government news website Sarukaaru that the operation involves gathering biometric information, including fingerprints, to ensure all foreign workers comply with Maldivian laws and regulations.

The operation is part of the administration’s efforts to address and regularise undocumented migrant workers in the Maldives. It is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Homeland Internal Security and Technology, Maldives Police Service, and Maldives Immigration, aiming to implement a sustainable solution to the issue of illegal immigrants within the following three years.

The operation’s first phase focuses on collecting data and offering legal pathways for migrant workers. The administration states that subsequent phases will target undocumented individuals, with biometric identification and repatriation coordinated with relevant embassies.
