British Gov’t Appoints New High Commissioner to Maldives

The British government has announced the appointment of Nicholas David Low as the new British High Commissioner to the Maldives.

He will take over from Caron Röhsler and is set to begin his tenure in January 2025.

Low, who has an extensive background in diplomacy and public service, currently serves as Counsellor at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) within the India and Indian Ocean Directorate. Additionally, he is a Visiting Fellow at the China & Emerging Economies Centre at the University of Northampton.

His previous roles include Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata from 2019 to 2023, and Head of the China Regional Network & Sustainable Urbanisation in Beijing from 2015 to 2019. Low also held the position of Acting Head of the Crisis Management Department at the FCO from 2014 to 2015 and served as Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka from 2010 to 2014.

Earlier in his career, Low was Head of Nuclear Issues at the Counter Proliferation Department of the FCO from 2007 to 2010 and Deputy Head of Mission in Algiers from 2004 to 2006. He also worked as Head of Trade, Investment, Trade Policy and Economics in Brasilia between 1999 and 2003 and as Second Secretary (Politics and Development) in Santiago from 1995 to 1999.

Before joining the FCO in 1993, Low worked in various roles within the Metropolitan Police Service across London boroughs and began his public service career at Guy’s Hospital in London.
