Vice President of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) Mohamed Fazeen, who was accused of sexually harassing a Broadcom employee, resigned from his position today.

In his resignation letter, posted on X, he said he is stepping down as he is not currently in a position to carry out his duties without “taking a side.”

Fazeen is accused of sexually harassing a female employee of Broadcom. The case was referred to the parliamentary committee on behalf of Broadcom and the employee who faced the harassment. After the initial investigation by the Committee, they stated that the testimony of the employees who filed the complaint, along with those summoned to the Commission, clearly indicated that a Broadcom employee had been subjected to abusive language and inappropriate touching. The Committee then referred the case to the Parliament floor, which in turn gave the Committee the go-ahead to proceed with the dismissal. He was scheduled for a hearing with the parliamentary committee last Monday regarding the case but had requested the hearing to be postponed as his lawyer’s wife had a medical emergency.

The request was approved and the meeting was scheduled for today. However, prior to the meeting, Fazeen submitted his resignation, prompting the Committee to close the case as there was no reason for them to go forward with the case.

In a letter posted by his lawyer along with Fazeen’s own resignation, all allegations against Fazeen are denied. The statement said any available evidence against Fazeen is “hearsay,” despite the investigation by the police, the internal Broadcom committee regarding such matters, and the parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions.
