The Housing Development Corporation’s (HDC) Managing Director, Fazul Rasheed, has revealed that the cables laid to supply power for street lights in Hulhumalé Phase 2 have gone missing.

HDC faced criticism from Hulhumalé North MP Hussain Shareef, who shared screenshots of complaints from residents regarding dark roads without street lighting in the area.

In his post earlier today, MP Hussain questioned the efficiency of the state-owned corporation, asking, “What service is the top-heavy HDC providing for the people?”

In response, Fazul Rasheed stated that HDC had placed orders to procure the necessary materials to install street lights. He added that while the electric grid was completed in August, the cables required to supply electricity had since disappeared.

Recent months have seen an uptick in the theft of electric cables from public infrastructure and streets across the city.

Despite the setback, Fazul emphasised that the development of Hulhumalé is progressing without interruption. “It is important to understand that there will always be ongoing work and tasks yet to be completed. I am proud of the tireless efforts of HDC staff, and I thank them for their hard work,” he said.
