Cargo Vessel Engulfed in Flames in Thaa Atoll, Passenger Missing

A cargo vessel travelling across Thaa Atoll was engulfed in flames yesterday, and one passenger has been reported missing.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) confirmed the fire had broken out aboard the vessel, named ‘Holhudhoo Boat.’ The Kadhdhoo Fire Station responded promptly, sending officers to the scene.
The incident occurred outside of Th. Kandoodhoo. The MNDF reported that there were 18 people on board, including the captain. Seventeen individuals were rescued, but one person, identified as Ali Mushfiq Mohamed, aged 25 and from L. Maavah, remains missing. Search operations by the MNDF’s Central Area Command and the Coastguard continue in an effort to locate him.

Two other individuals, one local and one expatriate, were taken to the Kandoodhoo Health Centre for treatment. Although they did not have any visible injuries, both were in shock. The health centre has arranged for their transfer to Dh. Kudahuvadhoo Hospital for further care.
Fight Erupts Between Expatriate Workers at Velana International Airport
In an another incident, a fight broke out between a group of expatriate workers at Velana International Airport (VIA) yesterday. The confrontation involved workers currently employed on the new terminal construction project.

Maldives Police Service responded to the scene and transported the injured workers to Tree Top Hospital and Hulhumale’ Hospital for treatment. However, the police did not release further details about the cause of the altercation, and the hospitals have not provided information regarding the condition of those treated.
This incident follows a pattern of similar confrontations among foreign workers, some of which have previously resulted in serious consequences.
