Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has unveiled the government’s plan to establish a centralised main prison, consolidating various correctional facilities nationwide.
Minister Ihusaan shared insights into an ongoing survey aimed at fortifying the prison management system in the Maldives. He underscored President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s dedication to merging disparate prisons on different islands, streamlining services within a singular central facility.
Moreover, Minister Ihusaan expressed concerns about the current prison management system, citing its high cost and impediments to the provision of adequate services, with expenses ranging from USD 1,400 to 2,000 per prisoner each month. He asserted that the government views the establishment of a centralised main prison as the optimal solution to address these issues and enhance rehabilitation services, while still maintaining the segregation of treatments for inmates involved in various crimes.
Highlighting the existing prisons in Hulhumale’, Dhoonidhoo, Himmafushi, and Maafushi in Kaafu Atoll, Minister Ihusaan acknowledged severe space constraints and a shortage of staff for rehabilitation. The proposed consolidation of prisons aims to facilitate the reintegration of treated prisoners into society, ensuring a smoother transition.
Minister Ihusaan also outlined plans for the new prison to adhere to international standards, providing high-quality treatment and rehabilitation services to inmates. He revealed that a comprehensive survey on construction costs, methods, and potential consequences will be conducted.
The prison is slated to be developed in the Greater Male’ Region, with the exact location to be determined following the survey.
