The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has announced the arrival of a Chinese team in the Maldives to carry out essential surveys ahead of the design phase for road development in Malé and Vilimalé.

This initiative stems from a project initiated during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to China, which will be financed by a grant of USD 130 million from the Chinese government.

In a statement on the social media platform X, the Ministry confirmed that the team of experts arrived in the Maldives last Sunday to conduct feasibility studies for the roads in Malé and Vilimalé.

A technical team from the Ministry met with their Chinese counterparts yesterday to discuss the project’s details. According to the Ministry, the site surveys are scheduled to take place from today until November 21, with road designs being developed based on the findings from these surveys.

President Muizzu has expressed optimism that the project will facilitate smoother travel on the streets of Malé and address the ongoing problem of flooding during heavy rains. As part of the road development programme, a stormwater management system will also be implemented.
