The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has announced the interception of a Somalian vessel by the Coast Guard’s Fourth Squadron Harbour Patrol, approximately 10 miles west of Fuvahmulah.

According to the MNDF, the vessel has been identified as a “skiff” commonly used by Somali nationals. Three Somali individuals aboard the vessel were taken into custody.

The MNDF stated that the vessel was transported to Fuvahmulah City and handed over to the Maldives Police Service for further investigation.

A police spokesperson confirmed their involvement in Fuvahmulah following reports of Somali nationals who had reportedly lost their way at sea.

Incidents involving Somali vessels drifting into Maldivian waters are not uncommon. The Indian Ocean region has also been a target for Somali pirates in the past, raising ongoing concerns about maritime security.
