The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy (MCCEE), in collaboration with USAID’s South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP), held a consultation to gather feedback from stakeholders on a draft guide to improve energy efficiency in schools across the Maldives.

The Energy Management Guide for Schools is designed for a broad audience, including school administrators, operations and maintenance (O&M) staff, teachers, and students. It provides a structured framework to reduce environmental impact, enhance thermal comfort, and improve indoor air quality in schools. The guide also includes practical strategies for integrating energy-efficient practices into the day-to-day management of school facilities.

Dr. Muaviyath Mohamed, Minister of State for Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, emphasised the role of schools in sustainability during his address. “Schools are not just centres of learning; they are pivotal in fostering a culture of sustainability. This guide will enable schools to lead by example in reducing their environmental footprint,” he said.

The session included participation from Mr. Aaron Schubert, Director of the Indo-Pacific Office at USAID/India, and Ms. Apurva Chaturvedi, Senior Regional Clean Energy Specialist at USAID/India, alongside other USAID and SAREP officials.

Contributions from the Ministry’s Energy Department, Utility Regulatory Authority, Ministry of Education, Association of Maldivian Planners, and SAREP experts will help refine the guide to ensure it effectively meets the needs of schools in the Maldives.
