The Commissioner of Police, Ali Shujau, has addressed public concerns about police conduct, urging officers to refrain from using mobile phones during duty hours to remain focused on their responsibilities and dedicated to serving the public.
In a speech delivered at the graduation ceremony of the 38th Initial Training Course, Commissioner Shujau highlighted the issue of officers using mobile phones while on patrol. He noted that although many officers are visible on the streets, they are often distracted by their phones, which detracts from their ability to stay vigilant and responsive to the needs of the public. He stressed that this behaviour needs to be addressed to avoid complaints from the public and to maintain the police’s professionalism.
Commissioner Shujau also reminded officers of the importance of maintaining respectful communication with the public at all times. He emphasised that the police should always treat citizens with dignity and that no situation should arise where officers are unable to speak politely to the people they serve.
Further, he encouraged officers to use their legal powers responsibly. He explained that the powers granted to the police by law should not be used recklessly, and officers should focus on finding solutions to problems without resorting to force.
In his closing remarks, Commissioner Shujau urged the police to embrace reform, stating that the force should not only enforce the law but also contribute to positive change. He expressed hope that these efforts would lead to a police service that is more loved and respected by the public.
To support this, he mentioned ongoing initiatives to improve the quality of police services, including training both domestically and internationally, with the goal of making the police more acceptable to the people they serve.
