This came into effect under the Fourth Amendment to the “Regulation on Packaging and Labelling of Tobacco Products” and the “Guideline on Duty Exemption for Goods Brought by Travellers, Personal Effects, and Commercial Samples”.
Under the new rules, travellers may bring in up to 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco without incurring duty charges. Any quantities exceeding these limits will be confiscated by Customs for up to 30 days, with the option for tourists to collect the items at the departure terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA) before their departure.
Additionally, Customs will seize tobacco products brought by non-tourist travellers that do not meet the Ministry of Health’s labelling requirements.
Customs authorities advise all passengers to familiarise themselves with the updated regulations to ensure a smooth entry process when travelling to the Maldives.
