Customs Launches Maritime Surveillance and Border Protection Section
Maldives Customs Service has officially launched the ‘Maritime Surveillance and Border Protection Section’ in a move aimed at bolstering efforts to combat smuggling activities within the country.
According to Customs officials, the newly established section will fall under the purview of the Directorate of Enforcement and Border Security. Its primary mandate will involve conducting surveillance operations to intercept illicit substances such as drugs and other contraband from entering the nation’s borders.
Efforts are already underway to equip the section with necessary vessels and equipment. Customs authorities have revealed that plans are in place to procure additional vessels, with a particular focus on enhancing surveillance capabilities. A new logo and uniform have also been designed for the personnel assigned to this section.
The deployment of surveillance assets is already underway, with a vessel acquired for this purpose two years ago already operational. Further bolstering this effort, the Japanese government has pledged support by providing two 30-foot vessels and an 85-foot vessel, with the former set to be operational by mid-year and the latter expected to commence operations in the first quarter of 2025.
In addition to Japanese assistance, discussions have been initiated with representatives from the Chinese Embassy and the US ‘Export Control and Related Border Security’ division regarding the procurement of additional vessels and equipment necessary for the effective functioning of the new section.
