The Minister of Defence, Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, has underscored the pivotal role of the Maldives Police Service in realising President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s development vision for the nation. The Minister’s remarks were made during the graduation ceremony for the 38th Basic Training Course for New Police Recruits.

Minister Ghassan highlighted the responsibilities entrusted to President Muizzu by the Maldivian people, which include safeguarding national independence and sovereignty, protecting citizens, and ensuring economic prosperity. He observed that developed and economically successful nations share common attributes such as security, justice, and the protection of people and property. He noted that while the primary duty of the police is to ensure public safety, their role extends further under the President’s development agenda.

He emphasised that the Maldives Police Service would play a critical role in driving economic progress and strengthening social cohesion, urging the graduates to prioritise peace and security in their duties. The Minister also reminded the recruits of their significant obligations to the people, the country, and its constitution, calling on them to serve with loyalty and dedication.

The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, also addressed the ceremony, urging police officers to remain steadfast in their allegiance to the citizens they serve, regardless of their posting. He highlighted the ongoing establishment of police services across various islands and urged cooperation from officers in these new locations.

Minister Ihusaan outlined four key priorities for the police: addressing the drug epidemic, tackling gang violence, managing the issue of undocumented migrants, and protecting vulnerable children from exposure to crime. Reflecting on the police service’s achievements in 2024, he expressed optimism for further progress in 2025 and called on officers to carry out their responsibilities with unwavering commitment.

The Commissioner of Police, Ali Shujau, also spoke at the event, addressing public concerns regarding police conduct. He urged officers to refrain from using mobile phones during duty hours and called for respectful communication with the public at all times. The Commissioner stressed the importance of responsible use of police powers, encouraging officers to adopt a reformative approach rather than punitive measures wherever possible.

A total of 127 recruits, including 37 women and 90 men, graduated from the training programme. Awards were presented to high-performing squads during the ceremony. The course is designed to provide new recruits with the necessary skills, knowledge, and behaviours required of a modern police service.
