The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has responded to mounting concerns regarding the substantial number of invalid votes in the recently concluded second round of the presidential election.

The commission affirmed its commitment to addressing these issues ahead of the parliamentary election in 2024.

During the initial round of the presidential election, a total of 4,835 votes were declared invalid.

However, in the second round, this number surged to 7,888. ECM pointed out that the increase in invalid votes was proportional to the higher voter turnout, with almost 80% of eligible voters participating in the first round and 87% in the second.

Recognising the public’s apprehension, ECM disclosed that they are actively engaged in discussions to implement solutions for the forthcoming parliamentary election.

The commission acknowledged the strenuous efforts made by officials to enhance the electoral process following each election, citing budgetary constraints as a significant factor causing delays in implementing remedies.
