The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has revoked the permit issued for the formation of the Maldives Community Party.
The permission was granted in November last year to Ali Ahmed, the individual behind the initiative. However, the ECM has now cancelled the permit as the party failed to submit the required membership forms within the designated time frame.
According to Maldivian law, a political party can only be registered if it has secured at least 3,000 members and has submitted the corresponding membership forms to the Elections Commission for official registration.
At present, the Maldives has nine registered political parties: the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), People’s National Congress (PNC), Adhaalath Party, Jumhooree Party (JP), Maldives Thirdway Democrats (MTD), People’s National Front (PNF), Maldives National Party (MNP), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and The Democrats.
