The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) is currently in deliberations regarding the distribution of voting templates exclusively to the polling stations frequented by visually impaired individuals.
In the previous presidential election, templates for visually impaired voters were dispatched to all polling stations, allowing them to cast their votes independently. However, the ECM has cited financial constraints, emphasising the high costs associated with implementing this approach across all polling stations.
The longstanding issue of limited voting rights for the visually impaired gained attention, prompting an amendment to the General Electoral Act. The last presidential election marked a historic moment as it became the first to enable individuals with visual impairments to vote autonomously, eliminating the need for external assistance.
During an interview on PSM News’ Raajje Miyadhu programe, Vice Chairperson of ECM, Ismail Habeeb revealed that templates were initially distributed to all polling stations for the visually impaired.
However, due to financial considerations, the commission is currently engaged in discussions to optimise the process. This involves exploring the possibility of providing templates exclusively to selected polling stations, as stated by Habeeb.
He acknowledged the associated expenses with this approach and highlighted ongoing discussions within the commission on addressing the issue. In particular, the commission is contemplating how to efficiently re-register visually impaired voters and share relevant information.
Collaboration with pertinent organisations and government authorities is underway to obtain crucial data, with potential challenges anticipated in constituencies encompassing multiple centers, both domestically and abroad.
