The Supreme Court of Maldives has directed the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) to furnish a response to the petition submitted by the coalition formed by the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC). The petition challenges the eligibility of Yameen to stand as a candidate in the forthcoming elections.

Former President Yameen’s representation to the ECM urges a review of his candidacy status, and the ECM has consequently been instructed to present a written response before the deadline of 3:00 PM today.

The basis for the rejection of Yameen’s candidature lies in his failure to meet the constitutional prerequisites mandated for participation in the presidential electoral process.

Under the provisions of the General Elections Act, any doubts arising pertaining to candidacy eligibility are exclusively referred to the Supreme Court. A case presented in this manner must reach a resolution within a stipulated period of seven days from the date of filing.

The Constitution further stipulates that such cases are to be deliberated upon by a panel encompassing all justices of the Supreme Court, with the pronouncement of the apex court being conclusive.
