The government has disclosed that The Arab Contractors, an Egypt-based company, has expressed interest in undertaking the construction of the Hithadhoo-Hulhumeedhoo bridge in Addu City.

During a press conference, Principal Secretary to the President, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, revealed that The Arab Contractors had shown interest in the project and offered to conduct the necessary surveys without charge. Consequently, the Economic Council has decided to award the project to the Egyptian company.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has committed to the construction of a bridge linking Hulhumeedhoo to the remainder of Addu City. The bridge project has been incorporated into the administration’s 14-week roadmap, with a dedicated allocation of USD2 million in the state budget.

Earlier this month, the government announced that preparations are in progress for the transfer of technical and detailed feasibility and design work essential for the construction of the Hithadhoo-Hulhumeedhoo bridge.

Addu City comprises four islands, with Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo notably distant from the other islands. Previous governments had assured residents that Addu would be transformed into a fully developed city by connecting Hulhumeedhoo to the rest of the islands through a bridge. However, the project remained dormant until the current administration took office.
