In a bid to enhance environmental education across the nation, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology  has disseminated the ‘Ecosystems of the Maldives’ handbook to schools across the country.

Crafted as part of the Regenerate Project, a collaborative initiative involving the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and backed by a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), this educational material was compiled by a team of experts hailing from institutions including the Ministry of Environment, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) ,and the Ministry of Tourism.

Designed primarily for school students, the workbook delves into a comprehensive exploration of the country’s natural landscapes, shedding light on the myriad life forms that inhabit these environments.

Its overarching aim is to elucidate the intricate interconnectedness between these creatures and the broader ecosystem, underscoring their profound relevance to human lives. Additionally, the workbook addresses environmental perils and the ongoing works to mitigate them.

Each chapter concludes with an interactive pop-up quiz, enhancing students’ engagement and comprehension. Moreover, the workbook proffers practical field activities that further enrich the learning experience.

First Lady Fazna Ahmed personally led a training session with the Ministry of Environment’s staff, focusing on the workbook’s curriculum.

Beyond the student populace, the event garnered participation from a distinguished array of figures including State Minister for Education Fatima Naseer, State Minister for Environment Hadija Naseem, Special Envoy to Climate Change Sabra Noordeen, representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, IUCN, USAID, MMRI, as well as various environmental advocacy groups.
For wider accessibility, the workbook is available for download from the official website of the Ministry: https://www.environment.gov.mv/v2/en/download/18896
