The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday its intent to take strict action against individuals and organisations involved in unauthorised sand extraction using machinery in areas designated for essential purposes.
EPA revealed that it had received numerous complaints regarding illegal sand removal activities across the atolls.
The agency raised specific concerns about the use of machinery to extract sand, particularly for commercial purposes, noting that such practices violate established environmental regulations. According to the EPA, sand extraction in essential areas must be conducted manually unless machinery use is approved through an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
EPA also urged all stakeholders to adhere to environmental regulations to safeguard sensitive ecosystems and promote sustainable resource management.
