These migratory birds are safeguarded under the “Protected Species Regulation,” a legislative measure designed to preserve and protect wildlife.
The agency emphasises that it is strictly prohibited to retain these birds, highlighting the significance of safeguarding these creatures as a crucial step in preserving the biodiversity and natural environmental wealth of the Maldives.
Reports have surfaced, indicating the capture of these migratory birds for both commercial gain and recreational purposes. The EPA, alarmed by this trend, has appealed to the public to assist in identifying individuals engaged in such activities. EPA also expressed appreciation for the ongoing cooperation from the public in addressing these concerning incidents.
The “Protected Species Regulation” is a regulation established under the broader Environmental Protection and Conservation Act. Under this law, the EPA is empowered to levy fines on individuals found guilty of illegally capturing these migratory seasonal birds.
Penalties for the mistreatment or capture of these animals range between MVR 30,000 and MVR 50,000.
