Fayyaz Ismail, Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), expressed concerns that the public may face difficulties in maintaining checks and balances if the presidential and parliamentary elections are merged.

This statement followed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s announcement that his administration would propose a constitutional amendment to combine the elections as a cost-saving measure.

During a broadcast on SanguTV, Fayyaz emphasised that the current democratic system and public elections serve the public interest. He stated that the parliament plays a crucial role in holding the government accountable.

“The public may face challenges in ensuring checks and balances in a presidential election if both elections are combined,” Fayyaz noted. He stressed that elections should be conducted for the public’s benefit, even if it involves state expenditure.

While discussing the separation of state powers, Fayyaz argued that the parliament should remain independent but suggested no issue with combining presidential and council elections.

Fayyaz also criticised the current six-month interval between the two elections, advocating for a one-year gap to allow the public adequate time to assess the government’s performance. He further accused the incumbent government of misrepresenting the number of political appointees until the parliamentary election concluded.

In contrast, during a meeting of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) on Monday evening, Muizzu highlighted the financial burden of separate elections.

He revealed that the parliamentary election cost the state over MVR 120 million, while the presidential election and its run-off amounted to over MVR 180 million. Muizzu estimated that holding both elections together could save the state nearly MVR 120 million.
