FENAKA Expands Solar Power Installations Across Maldives
FENAKA Corporation is advancing its renewable energy initiatives in the Maldives with the widespread installation of solar panels, aiming to reduce reliance on diesel power generation.
Under the “Poised Project,” funded by a grant from the Asian Development Bank, FENAKA is collaborating with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to implement solar-diesel hybrid power systems. This project seeks to enhance renewable energy integration and decrease fuel dependency.
In Thaa atoll, Fenaka is installing 2.49 MW of solar panels and a 1.9 MW battery energy storage system. Many islands in the atoll have already seen the installation and pre-commissioning of solar panels, with the remaining installations expected to be completed by the end of the month.
The initiative will also extend to Baa and Raa atolls starting in September. Baa atoll will receive 2.74 MW of solar panels, while Raa atoll will see 3.599 MW installed. Additionally, a total of 5 MW of solar panels will be set up at various power plants across these atolls.
FENAKA is also working on the “Aspire Project,” which focuses on installing solar panels in the six largest islands it serves. These include Addu City, Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo, Fuvahmulah City, Lhaviyani atoll Hinnavaru, Baa atoll Eydhafushi, and Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi, with a total of 11 MW of solar panels to be installed.
These efforts align with the government’s Strategic Action Plan, which aims to convert 33 per cent of the nation’s electricity generation to renewable energy.
