The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed a surge in Filariasis cases in Kulhudhuffushi City, with the number rising to 25 individuals.

The cases were detected during a health screening camp organized for migrants by Kulhudhuffushi Hospital, in collaboration with HPA and various other organizations.

During the screening camp, 16 cases were initially identified, prompting a comprehensive assessment of individuals between December 1st and December 19th. The screening specifically targeted expatriates living in Kulhudhuffushi City, coinciding with World AIDS Day.

HPA reported today that out of the 434 individuals screened for Filariasis, 25 migrants tested positive for the disease. Notably, 409 individuals tested negative for Filariasis during the screening period.

The agency highlighted that the individuals who tested positive were nationals arriving in the Maldives from countries where Filariasis remains endemic. Efforts are currently underway to control the spread of the disease.
