Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that a Panama-flagged oil tanker, Jian Jie, docked at Ihavandhippolhu last Thursday to access services from the Uthuru Maritime Service (UMS).

This marks the second vessel to visit the atoll since bunkering services were introduced on 18 September, and the first to seek services from UMS.

The Jian Jie, which operates between Abu Dhabi and China, required several services including crew change, clean water supply, pilotage, food supplies, and spare parts. The vessel is also undergoing maintenance work, and is scheduled to remain in Ihavandhippolhu for five days.

MPL confirmed that crew members arriving for the vessel were transferred to Haa Alif Uligan and took part in the inauguration of the Seaman’s Rest Area. The new facility is intended for the rest and recuperation of crew members docking through the International Ship and Port Security (IPS) Gate, which has also been established in Uligan. The rest area provides recreational facilities to seafarers.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by MPL’s Managing Director Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, Hoarafushi MP Ali Moosa, and Uligan Council President Ahmed Muaz Mohamed.

In addition to MPL’s involvement, several private businesses are assisting in providing services to the tanker. Nine crew members from the Jian Jie are set to transfer to Velana International Airport for outbound flights, while six replacement crew members have already arrived in Uligan.

The event highlights the expanding maritime capabilities of the Maldives and the growing role of UMS in providing essential services to vessels traversing international waters.
