Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that the first vessel seeking bunkering services at the newly launched “Uthuru Maritime Services” facility is scheduled to arrive on October 3.

In a statement shared via social media, MPL’s Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, revealed that the facility will offer 14 different services. He highlighted growing interest from foreign vessels, noting that the first ship to utilise the facility will be an oil tanker registered in Panama.

The vessel will dock at Ihavandhippolhu Atoll, where it will receive pilotage services, fresh water bunkering, and crew change support. Additionally, the tanker will be supplied with food and spare parts.

MPL also confirmed that private companies would be involved in providing services to the vessel, which is expected to remain at the atoll for approximately five days to undergo maintenance. This extended stay is seen as a valuable opportunity for local businesses to engage in trade.

The Uthuru Maritime Services facility, situated within Ihavandhippolhu Atoll, includes an International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Gate. This ensures that services are provided to international standards. MPL has also launched a dedicated website and 24/7 call centre to offer further assistance to customers.

The government has invested between USD 15–20 million to establish international bunkering services, in partnership with Vitol Bunkers.
