Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam said yesterday that by the end of this year, they will have successfully trained 80 people with the “rescue diver” certification for fishing vessels.
In an event held at Hulhumale’ Phase 2 to launch the Open Water dive program organised by Ocean 6|50, Minister Shiyam said 56 divers have already completed the rescue diver certification.
This is an initiative by the ministry to ensure all fishing vessels in the Maldives have at least one person on board with the rescue diver certification to prevent fatal accidents from occurring with deep sea divers on fishing vessels.

The first phase of the programme was launched yesterday. Participants will learn open-water diving and advanced first aid and receive training to prepare them for any other emergencies they may encounter at sea.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources said it planned to establish two Guinness World Records for scuba diving.
