While multiple spa businesses operate in the Male’ area, some reportedly act as fronts for illegal activities. It has been suggested that some expatriates working in these establishments share their photos and contact details on social media, purportedly to solicit clients.

In response to concerns about unlawful operations, authorities conduct regular enforcement activities at such establishments. As part of ongoing efforts to identify undocumented expatriates, a targeted operation has been underway, including checks on residences of expatriates suspected of living illegally in the Maldives.

Recent operations have resulted in several arrests, with six individuals detained on October 2 and an additional seven on October 15. Since the operation began, over 4,000 undocumented expatriates have reportedly been deported. Authorities note that some expatriates have attempted to evade detection by relocating to other islands.
