Five MDP Leaders Express Interest in Contesting 2028 Presidential Election, Says Solih
Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed that five senior members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have already expressed interest in contesting the 2028 presidential election on the party’s ticket.
Speaking on Raajje TV’s Fashaairu programme, Solih was questioned about his own intentions regarding the 2028 election. While he refrained from giving a definitive answer, he stated that he had held discussions with the party’s leadership about his political future. He assured that any decisions he makes will be communicated to the party’s leadership.
Solih highlighted the expressions of interest within the MDP as a positive sign, suggesting it fosters a competitive environment conducive to internal party growth. However, he called on all aspirants to prioritise strengthening the party.
“There are four to five people within the party who have already expressed their interest in contesting. This is a positive thing, as it creates a competitive environment to carry out internal work. However, I request all of them to remain actively involved in running the party,” he said.
He refrained from naming those who have shown interest, emphasising the importance of unity and collective progress within the party. Solih also indicated that any premature announcement of his own plans could harm the party, stating that the timing of such disclosures is crucial.
The former president’s comments come as four years remain before the next presidential election. Meanwhile, opposition leader and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has already declared his intention to run in 2028.
Solih’s remarks suggest an active and competitive political landscape within the MDP, setting the stage for what could be a dynamic electoral contest.
