Candidates Confirmed for Presidential Election 2023
Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has confirmed the eligibility of five candidates from political parties as well as three independent candidates for the upcoming Presidential Election 2023, to be held September 9, this year.
These announcements were made via Twitter account of ECM’s Vice Chairman and Spokesperson, Ismail Habeeb.

Below are the candidates along with their running mates, and their respective political affiliation:
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)
- Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
- Running mate: Mohamed Aslam
People’s National Congress (PNC)
- Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
- Running mate: Hussain Mohamed Latheef
The Democrats
- Ilyas Labeeb
- Running mate: Hussain Amr
Jumhooree Party (JP)
- Qasim Ibrahim
- Running mate: Ameen Ibrahim
Maldives National Party (MNP)
- Mohamed Nazim
- Running mate: Dr. Ahmed Adil Naseer
Independent
- Hassan Zameel
- Running mate: Mariyam Aleem
Independent
- Ahmed Faris Maumoon
- Running mate: Abdul Sattar Yoosuf
Independent
- Umar Naseer
- Running mate: Ahmed Saleem
The final list of candidates and the order they appear on the ballot paper is set to be announced tomorrow, at Dharubaaruge, at 1630, according to ECM.
As per the regulations, candidates who are unable to attend this draw are required to provide the ECM with a letter of substitution. However, should both the candidate and their substitute be absent, the ECM will resort to the lottery system to determine the selection.
