Dr Mohamed Shafeeq, former finance minister of the Maldives, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC). The Privatisation and Corporatisation Board (PCB), which oversees the governance of state-owned enterprises, announced the appointment on its website, confirming that Dr Shafeeq joined the board on 2 December.
Dr Shafeeq previously served as the head of finance at HDFC before taking on the role of finance minister. His return to the corporation is seen as a significant development, given his prior experience with housing finance and public administration.
The appointment follows his resignation as finance minister on 30 September, a position he held during a crucial period for the nation’s economic management. On the same day, President Mohamed Muizzu named Moosa Zameer, who had been serving as foreign minister, to replace him in the finance ministry.
HDFC plays an important role in supporting housing initiatives in the Maldives, and Dr Shafeeq’s appointment is expected to contribute to the corporation’s efforts in addressing the nation’s housing finance needs.
