Former Foreign Minister Shahid is reportedly gearing up to enter the race for the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Presidential election, although no official announcement has been made to confirm this yet.

Sources within the MDP suggest that Shahid is poised to emerge as the sole contender for the party’s top leadership position.

Under the MDP Constitution, in the event of a single candidate standing for election, there will be no need for a general vote among party members to determine the presidential nominee.

The appointment of former President Mohamed Solih as interim president by the MDP last November marked a significant development. However, President Solih has indicated that he will not be seeking re-election for the party presidency.

The forthcoming election is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 2nd March 2024.

Candidates interested in contesting the election have until 14:00 on 20th February 2024 to submit their nominations, with the deadline remaining open until the same time on that date.

As part of the nomination process, applicants are required to furnish a criminal and debt record from the Department of Judicial Administration.
