Former Vice President Faisal Naseem has officially joined the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) today.

The ceremony, held at the party’s headquarters, saw former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih accepting Faisal’s membership form, symbolising a new chapter in Faisal’s political career.

Addressing the gathering, Solih praised Naseem for his integrity and dedication, stating that his inclusion in the party would inject fresh energy into the MDP.

Faisal’s departure from the Jumhooree Party last month, where he had been a member for sixteen years, underscores a significant realignment in the political landscape. Despite his previous affiliation, Faisal maintained a distant relationship with Jumhooree Party leader Gasim Ibrahim during his tenure as Vice President.

Expressing his satisfaction with joining the MDP, Naseem highlighted the necessity for collaborative efforts to address pressing issues confronting the nation. Emphasising the importance of securing a parliamentary majority for MDP in the upcoming elections, Faisal lauded the party’s citizen-centric approach to governance.

Reflecting on his political journey, Naseem acknowledged his admiration for Solih, dating back two decades to their initial engagement in politics through the special majlis. While Faisal had previously been a member of MDP, he departed after the party’s first national congress. However, he reiterated his unwavering commitment to the party’s principles and ideology throughout his career.

Faisal’s decision to join MDP signals a significant development in Maldivian politics, with implications for the upcoming electoral landscape.
