A fuel barge operated by the state-owned Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) ran aground on the northwest reef of GA. Nilandhoo yesterday morning.

Nilandhoo Council President Nasih Ibrahim confirmed the incident, stating that FSM had informed the Council of its plans to deploy an additional vessel to refloat the barge. According to Nasih, the company has not requested any assistance from the Council to manage the operation.

“No injuries were reported in the accident, and there have been no indications of oil leakage into the sea,” Nasih added.

The extent of the damage to the reef is currently being assessed. Similar incidents in the Maldives have typically led to damage assessments conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), often resulting in fines for the responsible parties.
