Fuvahmulah City Council and RACL Partner to Establish Tourism Zone Near Airport

The Fuvahmulah City Council has signed a development agreement with Regional Airports Company Ltd (RACL) to create a 12-hectare special tourism zone near the airport, aiming to boost tourism in the city.
Mayor Ismail Rafiq, representing the Fuvahmulah City Council, and Managing Director Ahmed Mubeen of Regional Airports formalized the partnership. Under the two-year agreement, Regional Airports will play a vital role in finding potential investors, overseeing the project’s design, and ensuring effective implementation.

The tourism zone aims to boost accommodations and recreational options for visitors to Fuvahmulah City. Mayor Rafiq expressed the city’s ambition to begin construction by the end of the year.
The development plans come alongside efforts to enhance air travel to the city, increasing accessibility for tourists. Discussions are ongoing to explore ways to increase the frequency of flights to Fuvahmulah City. Additionally, a feasibility study was initiated in January and conducted in collaboration with RACL to assess the potential of upgrading the airport to accommodate jet aircraft.
Fuvahmulah City, a Maldivian island with a population of approximately 13,000, is renowned for its natural beauty and exceptional diving spots. The city currently has 21 guesthouses operating to cater to the growing influx of tourists.
