The Ministry of National Planning, Housing & Infrastructure, today, announced plans for the second phase of the government’s housing project, which includes the allocation of an additional 6,000 flats and more than 4,500 land plots.
Housing Ministry State Minister, Akram Kamaludeen, confirmed that the 6,000 flats would be designated for Hulhumale’, providing much-needed housing options for the growing population.
This initiative follows President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s recent announcement of a housing scheme, which aims to provide land and flats to long-term Male’ city residents, those who have lived in the capital for 20 years or more. President Solih emphasised that the lack of housing is one of the foremost challenges faced by urban residents.
Under this housing scheme, around 19,000 individuals will be granted land plots, while 16,000 others will receive flats. In the initial phase, a portion of beneficiaries has already received their allocated land.
Addressing concerns that applicants for flats may not have the opportunity to apply for land, the Solih assured that this issue has been resolved, with further details to be made public in due course.
The government’s commitment to addressing the housing crisis was first demonstrated when it opened 4,000 flats as part of the landlord scheme. Overwhelming demand was evident, with more than 20,000 applications received. The government has pledged to allocate flats to all eligible individuals.
As part of the ongoing efforts, construction is underway for 8,000 flats in Hulhumale’, with an additional 4,000 flats at a cost of MVR 2.5 billion.
The Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation has revealed plans for 32 18-storey towers in Hulhumale’, comprising 1,200 two-bedroom apartments and 2,800 three-bedroom apartments. The government anticipates that people will begin residing in these flats before the end of the current term.
In the first round of the government’s ‘Binriyari’ scheme, the Housing Ministry has reported that 18,955 individuals, representing 9,003 plots, will qualify for land allocation.
