MV+ News Desk | November 9, 2024

The Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development has revealed plans to develop seven islands in the Maldives as urban centres. The initiative aims to provide modern services to provinces, reducing reliance on the capital, Malé.

The islands identified for development are:

  • Raa Ungoofaaru
  • Baa Eydhafushi
  • Lhaviyani Naifaru
  • Alif Dhaalu Mahibadhoo
  • Faafu Nilandhoo
  • Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo
  • Laamu Fonadhoo

This move is part of the government’s broader Urban Development Project, which seeks to deliver high-quality services across multiple sectors in alignment with the national master plan. Additionally, the government has introduced the Urban Development Bill in Parliament to formalise the initiative.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu emphasised that the urban centres will offer enhanced services in key areas such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
