The Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu, has announced the introduction of A’level classes in 23 additional schools.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to provide greater access to higher secondary education. Additionally, students who achieve at least one pass in their O’level examinations will now be eligible to enrol in A’level studies.

During the Prize Day Ceremony at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Dr Shafeeu expressed concern over the limited number of students progressing to Grades 11 and 12 after completing their O’levels.

The Minister highlighted that out of 7,000 students who start Grade 1, fewer than 2,500 complete their O’levels and qualify for high-standard universities. To address this issue, the government aims to extend A’level education opportunities to a larger number of students.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu supports this initiative, advocating for increased access to A’level studies. Discussions have been held to enable students with passes in one or two O’level subjects to pursue higher secondary education.

The government plans to review the results of schools newly offering A’level studies and expand higher secondary education to even more institutions.
