Minister Ihusaan emphasised the decision to carry out the death penalty and assured that the execution process would strictly follow established legal norms.

Minister Ihusaan stated that a thorough assessment of necessary steps would be conducted, taking into consideration all aspects.

In the past, there have been efforts to enforce the death penalty, but recent history in Maldives indicates that no executions have taken place. Despite attempts at retribution during the tenure of former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the death penalty was not actually implemented.

Yameen had expressed consistent support for the death penalty, acknowledging various challenges hindering its execution. He highlighted ongoing investigations in the Maldives and the public’s lack of confidence in the current state of criminal investigations.

The succeeding government under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has explicitly stated its lack of intent to carry out the death penalty, signaling a departure from the previous administration’s stance on this matter.
