Gov’t Collects Data on Over 700 Immigrants Under Operation Kurangi

The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has announced the collection of data for over 700 immigrants as part of Operation Kurangi. 

The initiative, aimed at addressing illegal immigration in the Maldives, was detailed by Minister Ihusaan in a recent social media post.

Operation Kurangi commenced its first phase on 2 May in Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll. This phase includes biometric identification procedures targeting undocumented immigrants, with the ultimate goal of coordinating their deportation with respective embassies. So far, data from 705 immigrants residing on the island has been collected.

Minister Ihusaan also revealed plans to expand the operation to five additional areas in the country simultaneously in the near future. He expressed gratitude to the Himmafushi Island Council for their support and assistance in the operation’s execution.

During the operation’s inauguration, Minister Ihusaan outlined its objectives, emphasising a three-year timeline to resolve the illegal immigration issue. The ministry plans to embark on a comprehensive data collection initiative, gathering fingerprints, photographs, and relevant information of all foreign residents in the Maldives within a year.

Moreover, Minister Ihusaan clarified that the collected data would not solely be used for enforcement against illegal immigrants. He assured that opportunities would be provided for illegal immigrants to regularise their status and enter the Maldives legally.
