The Ministry of Tourism and Environment discussed improving the Maldives’ waste management facilities with Pakistan yesterday.
This discussion was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where the Maldives participated in the “Plastic-Free Rivers and Seas” regional roundtable discussion held by the South Asian Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP). In a meeting with the Pakistani State Minister Shezra Mansab, the Maldivian Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, Ahmed Nizam, discussed the importance of combating waste management together and the opportunities available to improve current facilities.
They also discussed the importance of sharing their experiences and improving capabilities for waste management.

The ministry said Nizam highlighted the Maldives’ progress in tackling plastic pollution during the roundtable and outlined the country’s goal to establish waste and resource management centres on every island by the end of the year.
Established in 1981, SACEP aims to address environmental degradation driven by poverty, overpopulation, overconsumption and wasteful production—factors that threaten economic development and human survival. The organisation recognises the need for collaborative action across South Asia, where many ecological and developmental challenges cross national and administrative borders.
