Gov’t Explore Feasibility of Producing Cooking Salt in Maldives
The government has tasked the state-owned Business Centre Corporation (BCC) with exploring the feasibility of producing cooking salt locally.
The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, told reporters at a press conference today that a lot of different types of salt are imported to the country and that the government plans to start salt production within the next five years.
He acknowledged that a lot of different types of salt are imported to the country.
“The tourism industry imports a lot of quality salt, as well as the salt that is commonly used in Maldives, we want all of it to be produced in Maldives,” he said, stressing that the government prioritises taking full advantage of the resources available in Maldives.
To support this initiative, the government is in discussions with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to secure financial assistance for the necessary research, according to Saeed.
