The Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development has authorised the construction of 10-storey buildings in Villimalé, a district island adjacent to the capital, Malé City.

The decision, delineated in the seventh amendment to the Malé Planning Regulations published on Thursday, marks a significant alteration in the island’s urban landscape.

Under the new regulations, which broaden the scope of permissible construction, developers can also seek approval for residential buildings. The guidelines stipulate that the maximum height for residential buildings is 30.48 meters (100 feet), effectively accommodating structures of up to 10 storeys in height.

Previously, the limit for residential and other-purpose buildings stood at six storeys. This extension underscores a commitment to urban development and is in alignment with a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his tenure as Mayor of Malé City.

Villimalé, situated just two kilometres west of Malé, is a vital part of the capital’s urban fabric and is accessible by ferry within five minutes. The decision to allow taller buildings in the area coincides with other infrastructure projects, including constructing a 100-bed tertiary hospital, for which a contract has been awarded to a Chinese company.

Additionally, plans are underway to enhance the island’s infrastructure, including road repairs and upgrades to water, sewerage, and electrical services, with contracts awarded to various companies.

These developments signify a concerted effort by the government to modernise and improve amenities in Villimalé, contributing to the island’s overall growth and development.
