The government has initiated discussions on the establishment of regulations for tourists visiting inhabited islands, aiming to create consistent guidelines for behaviour and accommodation in local areas.

Key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, and the Maldives Police Service, convened to address the growing need for clear regulations. According to the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, the primary goal of the meeting was to draft rules that would ensure the integration of tourism into residential areas, as local tourism sees steady expansion across the Maldives.

The rise in local tourism has led to an increase in guesthouses on inhabited islands. As a result, the need for a consistent framework for tourist accommodation and behaviour has become increasingly important.

Some islands have already implemented specific regulations, such as signage in local islands informing visitors about appropriate dress codes and expected public behaviour. The government now seeks to standardise these measures across all residential areas to better manage the impact of tourism on local communities.
