The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has initiated a programme aimed at training rescue divers for fishing vessels, in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to enhance maritime safety.

This initiative, a key component of the government’s 14-week roadmap, was officially launched by Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim in Madaveli, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

Addressing attendees at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Thoriq underscored the challenges faced by fishermen involved in net fishing, leading to the necessity for scuba diving activities. He expressed optimism that the newly introduced programme would effectively address the risks associated with such diving practices.

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam, also present at the ceremony, acknowledged the financial constraints experienced by fishermen and highlighted the broader challenges confronting the fishing industry. Nevertheless, he assured the fishing community of the government’s commitment to fulfilling President Muizzu’s pledges. Emphasizing the significance of the programme, Minister Shiyam stressed its role in ensuring the safety of fishermen.

As part of the ceremony, the Ministry of Fisheries entered into agreements with six selected authorities responsible for conducting the training of rescue divers. The programme aims to certify at least one crew member on every fishing vessel as a rescue diver, with an initial focus on training 50 fishermen during the first phase.

Experienced instructors will guide participants through open water diving, advanced-level diving, and first aid. Successful completion of the programme will equip individuals with the necessary skills to provide emergency assistance during diving activities and other incidents at sea.
