The government has reopened the water fountain located in Republic Square, restoring it to full operation ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
In a special ceremony held last night, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu officially reopened the fountain, marking the commencement of pre-Eid festivities with the ceremonial lighting up of the Greater Male’ region.
Across the capital city and neighbouring islands, vibrant festive lights have been installed to mark the Islamic holidays following the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan. This collaborative effort involved multiple government institutions working together to ensure the success of the initiative.
The Maldives government has opted to celebrate this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr on a grand scale, reflecting the significance of the occasion.
Various ‘Eid Mubarak’ light displays in Arabic and iconic symbols associated with Islamic celebrations now adorn the Greater Male’ region, adding a colourful vibrancy to the surroundings.
Muizzu has previously underscored his administration’s commitment to prioritising Islamic festivities, including Eid celebrations.
Speaking at a ceremony following his presidential election victory, President Muizzu highlighted the positive response received from the public during last year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebrations, which featured elaborate light displays and the continuous playing of the Takbir.
He further reassured that Islamic festivities would be celebrated expansively throughout the Maldives, tailored to the capacity and resources of each respective island and atoll council.
The recommissioning of the fountain at Republic Square was overseen by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The structure, measuring 28 x 28 meters, was initially inaugurated during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen.
However, due to a lack of maintenance and upkeep in recent years, the fountain had remained inactive until its recent restoration.
